The National Air and Space Museum Archives supports the mission of the National Air and Space Museum by acquiring and preserving for public and cultural use materials documenting air and space flight. These documentary materials include a wide range of visual and textual materials, many emphasizing the technical aspects of air and space craft and their propulsion system. The archival collection contains approximately 10,000 cubic feet of material, including an estimated two million photographs, 700,000 feet of film footage, and two million technical drawings.

SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHIC HOLDINGS

SPACE SHUTTLE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION
The Space Shuttle Photograph Collection is maintained in cooperation with NASA's Johnson Space Center. The collection contains photographs from STS-41C to the present, with an extensive collection of photographs taken by space-shuttle astronauts using handheld cameras as well as some radar imagery. RUDY ARNOLD COLLECTION
This collection spans the career of aviation photographer Rudy Arnold and includes his negatives, glass plates, and color transparencies. The photographs' subjects include civilian and military aircraft, experimental aircraft, seaplanes, airliners, aerial images, helicopters, aviation events, and personalities. AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE PHOTOGRAPHIC SECTION COLLECTION
This collection contains material from the Photographic Section of the U.S. Air Service, American Expeditionary Force, during World War I. The material was originally assembled by Edward Steichen, chief of the Photographic Section. The collection includes an article by Steichen on aerial photography and volumes on photographic interpretation, camera installation, and camouflage.
